HBF Health Fit Fan Jaime Smillie has always been sporty. Taking part in team sports formed a large part of her school life, and since leaving she’s been part of a netball team. However, despite having gone years without any sport-related injuries, a few years ago she tore a ligament in her right knee.

Far from being the temporary pain she thought it was, the injury in fact took two years to heal, during which she was unable to do much exercise beyond running for brief periods of time. This left Jaime out of shape and out of the habit of exercise, which she found more difficult to get back into than she imagined.

Since signing up to the HBF Health Fit Fans competition though, Jaime’s back on track. She’s running every night after work with friends and ran the 12km at the HBF Run for a Reason, and she’s taken netball up again (save for a brief period when she injured her ankle on-court – she wonders if she’s becoming more accident-prone as she gets older!)

Jaime has also become more aware of her eating habits, and she’s changed those for the better. Working in hospitality, she tends to eat at odd hours, so rather than succumbing to a take-away she now cooks her meals at the beginning of the week and freezes them, ensuring a good helping of veggies is in each one. With a couple more fun runs planned this winter, Jaime’s well and truly back in the game.
