An eye-opening day one of pre-season stoked draftee Hamish Davis’ determination to match it with West Coast’s elite trainers this summer.

Arriving at the club for his first session in blue and gold on Monday alongside the returning five-plus year Eagles, Davis and his fellow draftees were greeted with a gruelling fitness test.

An outstanding runner who turned recruiters’ heads with his workrate as a high half-forward for Claremont, Davis admitted a touch of frustration when fitness staff pulled him out of the test early.

Then watching the intensity athletic marvel Reuben Ginbey trained with set a high standard Davis will strive to emulate.

"Reuben Ginbey, watching him train today, he trained with such intensity and from what all the boys are saying he trains as hard as he can all the time," Davis said.

“That’s certainly someone I’ll be trying to match – I know it will be difficult because he trains so hard – but he just seems as if he goes his hardest for every drill.

“Just trying to look at players like that and work as hard as I can.”

Davis starred for Claremont’s Colts team in 2024, earning a call up to the senior side for seven matches, including a superb four-goal, 21-disposal effort in the elimination final against East Fremantle.

“I probably play as that half-forward. Love to run, get up the ground and use that running ability to the best of my ability to outwork my defender,” Davis said.

“With that you’ve got to know where to run so I feel like my running patterns and footy IQ to know where to run is a strength of mine and something I try and bring.”

Davis was part of a six-player draft class, including fellow WA pair Bo Allan and Malakai Champion, plus Jobe Shanahan, Tom Gross and Lucca Grego.

Heading into 2025, the Eagles are set to have 23 players aged 22 or under as the team regenerates under new coach Andrew McQualter.

“I think it’s a great time to come into the footy club. Very young demographic and I think that will be easier for us boys to settle in with those boys of similar ages,” Davis said.

“I’m just excited to get stuck in and keep getting to know them as much as I can.

“There’s certainly some pretty good players (the club drafted). Obviously we’ve got 'Bo-ey' and Mal, who are good mates of mine. I played state footy with them throughout the year and they’re both great players.

“The boys from the other states I haven’t seen a whole lot of them but watching their highlights they certainly know how to play the game.”
