Dynamic forward Liam Ryan and gun defender Jeremy McGovern will be closely monitored this week ahead of a crunch game against Port Adelaide at Metricon Stadium.

Ryan suffered a corked calf when he slotted his third major and was buffeted over the goal line by Ryan Lester late in the defeat to Brisbane last Saturday night.

“Liam after kicking that goal got a knock to the back of the calf which caused the normal swelling, etcetera,” General Manager – Football Craig Vozzo told westcoasteagles.com.au.

“He’s slowly recovering from that and doing more training. He’s progressed to a walk/jog and we expect him to do some training tomorrow.

“He’ll be a test later in the week, but we’re hopeful that he’ll be available."

McGovern is also on the recovery trail after an eventful start to hub life saw him roll an ankle in a scrimmage against the Lions’ reserves while serving a one-game striking suspension.

“The scan showed that there was no syndesmosis injury, which was great,” Vozzo said.

“It ended up being just the garden variety type of ankle sprain, the ligament sprain. Jeremy is recovering really well. He’s a quick healer normally.

“We expect he will be a test later in the week.”

In more positive news, dangerous forwards Jarrod Cameron (groin) and Nic Reid (hamstring) both got through about 40 minutes in the scrimmage match after lengthy lay-offs.

“Jarrod Cameron had some game minutes last week. We played the Brisbane seconds guys, non-selected guys, and (he) did really well,” Vozzo said.

“He probably played 30 to 40 minutes and pulled up well from that. He’s going to be a slow build from here but he’s on the right track.

“A good stepping stone for (Reid). Graduated build towards full fitness but on the right track.”

Experienced midfielder Mark Hutchings was on lighter duties last week as he works back from a knee complaint and remains about a month away.

“He had some extra swelling that had to be attended to but back on the track running today and he will now build, hopefully with no further impediments, towards full training,” Vozzo said.

Meanwhile, draftees Ben Johnson (shoulder) is about two weeks away from joining in contact work and Callum Jamieson (shoulder) is a touch further advanced, with the big man almost cleared to participate in full training.
