Passing down the passion
Rebecca Proud's passion for the club has been passed down through the family
Member of the Round Rebecca Proud from Toodyay is one of these fans, who has been brought up to support the Eagles.
“Footy season is a very exciting time of the year for our family and has been for the past 25 years for my Mum and Dad,” Rebecca wrote to the club.
“For me it has been really exciting ever since I got my own membership and got to go to my first every footy game back in 2005.
“Ever since I have been hooked, I read the paper every morning at boarding school to see if anything interesting has happened and then I wait all week for Saturday or Sunday to come so I can go to the game.”
Despite only being a young girl at the time, Rebecca remembers all too well the heart stopping moment when she became a West Coast fan for life.
“There is one moment in my life that I will never forget, the moment when we won the grand final back in 2006, Mum sitting on the couch and me crouching behind the couch constantly popping my head over the top to see if it was over,” Rebecca recalled.
“When the five minute warning popped up I just couldn’t watch.
“Finally, after the longest five minutes of my life the siren sounded and our family celebrated the amazing victory.”
Since becoming a West Coast Eagles Season member, Rebecca’s devotion to the club has only grown stronger as she has witnessed defining moments in club history.
“My favourite memory would be when Nic Nat took that mark and kicked the goal after the siren against the Kangaroos,” Rebecca reminisced.
“I wasn't feeling well during the game and we were going to head home, but I said I'll be ok, and luckily we didn't leave.
“It was the most exciting game I had been to and the atmosphere and noise was so loud; I must have known something special was going to happen!”
Now at boarding school, coming to the football has become important time the family can spend together.
“Mum and Dad come down to Perth for the games so I look forward to these weekends as I get to go out with them,” Rebecca said.
“I think I'm very lucky to be a member and love spending this time with my family.”
The devoted member has her work cut out for her converting her fellow boarders to become West Coast fans, but in the meantime she is happy to display her loyalty.
“My friends support various teams, so there's plenty banter with whoever supports the team the Eagles are playing that week,” Rebecca laughed.
“We have a tipping competition at school too and I have to watch the game on TV if I'm not going to the game.
“I have posters decorating my room at the boarding house; I think the other girls think I'm a very devoted fan!”
