1. The class of new skipper Luke Shuey was evident throughout as he produced a polished performance. Shuey was the highest possession-winner on the ground with 31 touches and given the quality of his skills that equated to a damaging performance as he relished his first opportunity to lead the team.
2. The resolve of former skipper Shannon Hurn was equally impressive. Although he relinquished the leadership in a formal sense, nothing changed within his on-field status. He marshalled the defensive effort, stood tall when required and finished with 21 possessions and seven marks
3. The torch was always going to shine on the first formal hit-out for star recruit Tim Kelly and he showed why he was such a high priority. His chemistry with Nic Naitanui and his fellow midfielders will evolve with every match-day experience but he wielded a strong influence on the contest, particularly in the second half.
4. Young ruckman-forward Bailey Williams, playing at AFL level for the first time, made a strong impression. Rotating with the imposing Naitanui and Nathan Vardy, he exerted an influence when on ball, gathered 12 possessions and also had a presence when deep in attack – kicking a nice set shot goal which drew a strong reaction from teammates.
5. Forward Jake Waterman enjoyed the opportunity to work in tandem with Williams and Josh Kennedy, who was outstanding with six goals, and is poised to take his game to another level. In his third season, Waterman presented strongly, produced his trademark gut running and kicked three goals in a classy display.
