Staying resilient and focused on tackling Port Adelaide is front of mind for the West Coast Eagles as the club works through a challenging “moment in time”, coach Adam Simpson says.
The Eagles have had the positive news that skipper Luke Shuey will return from a hamstring strain tempered by the loss of Elliot Yeo (groin) and other setbacks, including veteran Shannon Hurn being unavailable to face the Power.
Hurn trained superbly last Thursday but pulled up sore and will miss West Coast’s second consecutive trip to Adelaide.
West Coast will name a team on Thursday afternoon – with big men Bailey Williams and Callum Jamieson listed as tests to be available - and fly east chasing victory over an in-form opponent.
“As a club we’re not complaining about the situation, not blaming anything, we’re just getting on with it and trying to stay resilient,” Simpson said.
“The guys are aware of that and we’re chasing wins. We don’t think we’re miles off with the way we’re playing, we’ve just let ourselves down for a quarter here or quarter there.
“We’ve been largely competitive for most of the year, just not a lot of reward on the scoreboard. That’s our challenge.”
Since heading into the round three RAC Derby unchanged, the Eagles have been whacked by injuries, starting in the second half against Fremantle and continuing since.
Sixteen players are currently on the injury list, many of them due to unavoidable collision-based setbacks.
“It’s collision-based, the majority, especially the long-term stuff. You always get a few soft tissues,” Simpson said.
“Dealing with that Fremantle game, no rotations in the back half, some younger players, some older players. Not making any excuses – we know it’s part of the game.
“We’ve just seemed to cop a bad whack like Dom Sheed (throat) getting a knock at training, young Harry (Edwards) hurting his wrist last week, just knocking a ball over the boundary line and he’s out for four weeks.
“Things like that become a challenge because that’s more luck those things, when it’s collision injuries as well.
“Three weeks ago we had four injuries and they were all one or two weeks away. In the space of three weeks we’ve just had a big cluster.
“We’re not the only club, there’s other clubs dealing with this as well, but it’s just happened to us two years in a row, which you’re always trying to get better at.
“We’re always looking at things we can do better, but there’s some things there we can’t avoid.”
