AFLW Match Preview: Eagles v Power

Check out who to keep an eye on, a stat that matters and what it means for the Eagles in their week six battle with Port

Where and when: Mineral Resources Park, Saturday, October 5, 3:05pm

TV: Live on 7mate and Fox Footy, and streaming live on Kayo

Last time we met: West Coast 6.3 (39) defeated Port Adelaide 4.9 (33) at Mineral Resources Park, round five, 2023.

The Eagles recorded their first win of the 2023 season against Port in a nail-biting six-point triumph under Friday night lights. West Coast’s speed had Port on the back foot, but the visitors weren’t going quietly and continued to hit back and keep the margin close. It was a ferocious contest played in perfect conditions, with Aisling McCarthy slotting two crucial goals and tallying 22 disposals, while Emma Swanson was strong in the midfield with 24 touches.

What it means for the Eagles: West Coast currently sit in seventh spot on the AFLW ladder, and a win on Saturday will only further solidify their position inside the top eight. The Eagles remain undefeated on the road so far this season, their two losses coming on their home turf against the Bombers in week two and the Lions in week four. After such a successful start to the season, the Eagles faithful will no doubt flock to the game, and the team will be looking to lock in their fifth win in front of their home crowd. The team will don their Pride Round jumpers, celebrating the diversity and inclusiveness within the sport and raising awareness for the importance of what Pride represents within the LGBTQIA+ community.

    15:21

The stat: West Coast has played Port Adelaide twice since joining the league, winning both games at Mineral Resources Park.

    Oppo in focus: Gemma Houghton

All-Australian key forward Gemma Houghton is an athletic and prolific goal scorer, and her pace and ability to swing momentum makes her a particularly dangerous opposition. The WA local comes into Saturday’s game following an impressive performance in Port’s loss to Richmond, finishing with a team-high two goals, 13 disposals and two tackles.

It’s a big week for: Sasha Goranova

Sasha Goranova will make her return against Port on Saturday, after sustaining a hamstring injury in the Eagles’ week three win over the Bulldogs. The 23-year-old has a high work rate and a tendency for big hits and clean spoils and after a number of weeks on the sidelines, will be itching to get back on field with her teammates.

Big call: The West Coast Eagles will remain undefeated against Port and secure the win at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday.

AFLW Match Report: Slow-starting Port overpower Eagles

Port Adelaide turned around after a scoreless first quarter to get the points over West Coast

Port Adelaide has climbed into the top eight after a comeback win against the West Coast Eagles, overcoming a slow start to win by 13 points at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday.

The Power were late to the party after travelling west but flipped the game on its head after a scoreless first quarter to win 7.7 (49) to 5.6 (36) in an impressive performance built on pressure.

West Coast started the game strongly, with three first-quarter goals from Lauren Wakfer, Bella Lewis and Ella Roberts.

The Power went on to kick five unanswered goals either side of half-time to set up their third win of the season, and their first victory in three meetings with the Eagles.

Port midfielder Abbey Dowrick started the charge, turning the tide in the second quarter and finishing with eight clearances from 19 disposals, with forward Gemma Houghton also critical with two goals.

    06:01

The visitors had to overcome another excellent performance from West Coast star Ella Roberts, who was outstanding to start the game and finished with a game-high 27 disposals, a career-high11 marks, and a goal.

She drove a brilliant opening term for the Eagles, who applied pressure and set up behind the ball to make sure the game was played in their half.

Roberts provided an early highlight in a dominant quarter when she laid a fend-off in defensive 50 and launched a coast-to-coast scoring chain, which also involved Mikayla Western bursting down the wing to drive the team inside the forward 50.

When Roberts took her fourth contested grab deep in the quarter and converted her set shot, the Eagles were 19 points clear, with the Power yet to score.

    01:32

The match completed flipped in the second quarter as Port ramped up its own pressure and hit the scoreboard through former Fremantle forward Houghton, who converted a classy snap from the pocket.

When Zoe Wakfer gave away a 50m penalty for rolling the ball back to her opponent after a free kick, Wendland kicked her first goal and the Power were rolling, securing a one-point lead at half-time after keeping the Eagles scoreless.

Justine Mules-Robinson took back-to-back chances to start the third quarter in her 75th game, giving the Power a 14-point advantage before Abbygail Bushby held her nerve after the siren to cut the margin to eight at the last change.

It took just three minutes, however, for the Power to kick back-to-back goals at the start of the fourth, setting the Eagles a challenge they couldn't overcome despite such a promising start.
