West Coast forward Josh Kennedy says the Eagles must tackle connectedness and work rate as they prepare to take on North Melbourne this Monday.
The Eagles will be grateful to return home after being unable to break a GMHBA Stadium losing streak after going down to Sydney by 92 points on Sunday in round 16.
Kennedy said the group’s synergy was sorely lacking, which is being examined ahead of the must-win match on Monday.
“There’s a few things, we’ve been through a fair bit of vision. But for us as a group, we didn’t work, we obviously didn’t work as hard as they did, so work rate was a big thing,” Kennedy told 6PR.
“We just know we need to get connected on field a lot better, and we need to play as a team, and we’re probably not doing that at the moment.
“From forwards to mids to the backs, just as a team we weren’t connected enough in the way that we want to, I suppose, move the footy and the way we want to defend, so we got opened up pretty bad."
“When you come against sides and you don’t play as a unit, you can get sliced apart, which is obviously what happened on the weekend.”
The key forward said Adam Simpson and his coaching staff had dug into vision and pinpointed what went wrong structurally against Sydney on Sunday.
“He (Simpson) was obviously really disappointed,” Kennedy said.
“We’ve got to, not move on quick, because there’s a lot of issues that we’ve got to go through the week, but we’re all here willing to get better.
“Everyone knows where they need to get better, coaches know where we need to get better as a group, and look, playing group’s here willing to have a crack at it, and go through.
“The coaches are here to help, and as a playing group we know we’ve got a lot to improve on."
“We’ll go through it, we’ve been through a lot of vision, we’ll probably go through a lot more, coming back when we get back into Perth, it’s just about getting better.”
Kennedy also highlighted that the run for finals is far from over, and the side are ready to face the competition in the back end of the season.
“We’ve got a really good list, we’ve just got to get a few things right on field and that’s been the biggest thing,” Kennedy said.
“The consistency over four quarters has been something that we’ve struggled with this year, but we’re still sitting in the eight.
“So, if we can get a bit of that connectedness on field with a bit more hard work, I think we’ll be fine."
“Head down, bum up and have a crack at it.”
The clash against North Melbourne will be crucial to shoring up a position inside the top eight, with the game shifted to Monday night to allow as many fans as possible to attend.
“It’s great that we were able to get that home game, and obviously with the capacity of what’s going on over the last couple of weeks, having a full crowd is going to be fantastic,” Kennedy said.
“We’ve got North Melbourne, so we’re looking forward to getting back home and playing in front of, hopefully, 60,000 of our fans.”
