The East Coast Eagles had the perfect start to season 2007 with three wins from three games against the new Balmain Dockers. The game between the two clubs is now known as the Eastern Derby as both clubs, East Coast Eagles with the West Coast Eagles and Balmain with the Fremantle Dockers, have developed relationships with these AFL clubs. The Dockers and the Eagles play off for the Western Derby every time they play against each other and now when East Coast and Balmain play they will play for the Eastern Derby. The first Eastern Derby was a great day for the East Coast Eagles.

The senior game was close up until half time, with it being a very physical encounter up until that stage. The skill level from both sides was down a little which is not unusual for a first game of the season. However after half time the East Coast Eagles skill and fitness level took over. In fact the Eagles kicked 16 goals to 6 after half time and ran away with a 94 point victory. The final score on the day being 23 16 154 to 8 12 60.

Craig Robinson and Jon Vlatko lead from the front and picked up possessions at will most of the day. Damien Russell had an outstanding debut for the club kicking six goals. Ben Rogers after a year away from the club also returned with five goals. However the outstanding display on the day was by the big red machine at centre half forward, Blair Oliver, who was a power of strength all day and finished off his great work with being named best on ground. It was great way to start our senior campaign in season 2007.

The seniors were backed up superbly by both the reserves and under 18’s. Reserve grade ran out winners 9 13 66 to 7 3 45. The two standouts on the day were Rowan Bilkey and Tim Physick. Rowan and Tim were outstanding down back and showed great leadership all day. This is hopefully the first step in the reserves defending their premiership from 2006.

The Under 18’s started the day off in style with a comprehensive 56 point victory. Outstanding on the day were the two Moeller boys who kicked 11 goals between them. Jason kicked five and Ashley six. After a lean 2006 the under 18’s look set for a much improved 2007.

The club takes on UNSW/ Eastern Suburbs next Sunday 22nd April at Rosedale Oval. We look forward to another step in the right direction for the East Coast Eagles next week against the Bulldogs.
