Where and when: Optus Stadium, Sunday, March 21, 3.10pm (AWST)

TV: Live on 7, Fox Footy, Kayo and the AFL Live official app

Last time we met: Gold Coast 14.6 (90) def. West Coast 6.10 (46) at Metricon Stadium, round two, 2020.

Nearly three months after round one, the season restarted following the COVID-19 enforced shutdown and it was the Suns who were ready, stunning the Eagles with a dominant 44-point victory in slippery conditions at Metricon. Gold Coast booted eight goals to one after half-time, with rising star Matt Rowell (26 disposals, two goals) leading the home side to an emphatic win.

What it means for the Eagles: Few teams face a tougher start to the season than Adam Simpson’s men, so getting the job done at home in round one will be crucial. After hosting the talented Suns, who will be eyeing a maiden finals berth in 2021, West Coast comes up against five finalists from last year and needs to get the campaign off to a positive start.

The stat: West Coast has never lost to Gold Coast in Perth. The Eagles won six-in-a-row at Subiaco Oval, as well as their two meetings so far at Optus Stadium.

The match-up: Liam Duggan v Matt Rowell

If Elliot Yeo (groin) was available then the midfield bull would be the ideal match-up for the Suns dangerman, but backman-turned-onballer Duggan is a more than capable contender for an accountable role on Rowell. After an excellent summer on the track, Duggan has showed promised in two practice matches running through the engine room, and his naturally defensive mindset could see him keeping a close eye on one of the competition’s most exciting young talents.

It’s a big week for: Alex Witherden

We will have to wait until Saturday to discover whether the former Lion will make his debut in blue and gold but, if he does, then Witherden will have a role to play across half-back alongside superboot Shannon Hurn. The recently-introduced rule restricting the man on the mark from moving should enhance Witherden’s ability to utilise his kicking skills and pick-off targets rebounding from defence. It could also be a West Coast debut for former Giants small forward Zac Langdon, who will be cleared from the 12-day concussion protocol in time for Sunday’s game.

Big call: Zippy goalsneak Jamaine Jones capitalises on a strong summer and slots three goals, including his first as an Eagle.
