West Coast Eagle, Belinda Smith, has been named in the AFLW Team of the week, taking out the defensive bench spot.

Smith’s selection comes off the back of her tireless effort against the Fremantle Dockers in Sunday’s RAC Derby, where she rounded up 17 disposals in heinous conditions.

As well as snagging these touches in torrential downpour, the half back also took home two much-needed marks, and two tackles, in the wet.

This mirrored a similar performance in round one, which saw Smith take home 12 disposals, three marks, and one tackle against the Adelaide Crows.

Smith showed her consistency in another big game on Sunday, keeping the Eagles in the contest until late in the fourth quarter.

The 25-year-old assisted the injury-ridden side to a near-victory, playing a strong, tough brand of footy.

The side weren’t able to take home the win last weekend, but came close, losing out by just nine points.

The final score sat at 2.11 (23) to 2.2 (14).

“Look, there’s a lot of improvement, especially from last year,” Smith said post-match.

“It’s tough for both teams, the rain, the wind.

“We’re proud of the girls, but we’ll just regroup and go again next week.”

The West Coast Eagles AFLW side now pack their bags for Punt Road, to take on Richmond at 5:10pm on Sunday.

After two losses to start the season, the women are keen to claim their first win on the road for 2021.
