What are your initial thoughts on that Adam?
It’s not good enough. I thought we had a swing. We played a really good side n Richmond; they pressured us really well and made the most of their opportunities. It was probably a goal difference every quarter. I thought the endeavour and spirit was there with our players and unfortunately we weren’t good enough tonight and we got beaten by a pretty good side.
They blocked your aerial game for most of the night?
Obviously we both lost a key forward and a key defender. But look, I think they took eight more contested marks than we did. That’s part of our game but it’s not the only part. We probably didnn’t manage to stop their style of play as much as they stopped ours and they made the most of their opportunities.
Adam you had a great run winning eight games in a row. Do you think the four-day break with the five and a half hour flight perhaps played a role?
You can’t deny that a four-day break with a flight is going to hurt you, but they had a five-day break with a flight too. The energy didn’t look like it dropped off much, so if I had of seen tired bodies out there I might have thrown that one out as an excuse. They fought to the end and Richmond were just too good. I think in the third quarter they kicked six straight and we kicked 4.4. We were chasing our tail a little bit in the last quarter.
How is JK?
He got a head knock and obviously couldn’t come back on. I had a chat with him at three quarter time and I wasn’t quite sure if he knew if I was talking to him or not. We’ll just have to assess him. We’ll do whatever is right for him.
With such a short break between games, is it going to make it hard (for him to get up)?
It will make it difficult, but every case is different. We won’t be pushing it. Whatever the docs say, we will follow whatever they tell us.
Is Oscar Allen a chance to come in?
He probably would have come up Oscar, he was just a bit sore and with the four days and travel we didn’t want to push him to the line, so he’ll be available next week.
Is that the big risk you’re facing at the moment, if you get an injury, concussion or anything like that you (might miss several games)?
Every club is the same. If you have a soft tissue injury now and you miss a couple of weeks you’re going to miss four games. We’re no different to anyone else. The depth of our list has been challenged throughout the year at stages. We’ve had the opportunity to blood some young players through. They got a really good experience tonight, they’ll learn from it and we’ll have to manage our list the next couple of weeks just like every other club.
Adam, there’s going to be a discussion there about the form at home versus the form away. I think you’re four losses from six games up in Queensland. You’ve barely just checked in, but how do you think you guys will acclimatise when it comes to playing up here?
I suppose you can make that comparison; it is what it is. I don’t think us losing tonight had anything to do with playing in Queensland. We got beaten by a better side. What happened nine weeks ago sometimes it’s hard to connect that. If we are going to win anything we need to win away from home, so we’re not hiding away from that either.
What did you make of Bailey Williams on debut?
It was a baptism of fire, especially when JK went down. We had to manage some of the guys’ minutes. He did some good things and he did some things that he’ll learn from. Being a first gamer, we cut him a little bit of slack.
It was unusual defensively the number of goals you gave away from free kicks and you had the out on the full too?
You look at the free kicks and sometimes you get frustrated at both ends. When they’re deep inside 50 and either given or not given you can ride that wave a little bit. Some of them were from pressure. Dusty’s goal, it looked like he wanted to go on an even tighter angle just for fun. The goals we gave up, there was probably four or five from free kicks, which is not normally us but that’s what happened.
Is Liam Ryan a genuine option as a full forward?
Yes, or at least that’s what he told me after the game.
Given what he did for Subiaco, is that something you look at, him as a deep forward?
We might have to. We’ll see how Josh pulls up. But it’s good to have that option, that (Ryan) can go deep and he knows how to play that role. He looked dangerous all night, Liam, and he really put his hand up tonight and stood up for us. We might look at that next week. He’s developed into an elite AFL player in the last two … years and it’s through his fitness. It’s something we didn’t know he had when we recruited him. He’s developed a really good engine and he gets up and back with his speed really well. But he has kicked lots of goal from deep forward as well, so he’s definitely an asset for us.
