West Coast Eagles premiership players Ashley Hansen, Tyson Stenglein and Chad Fletcher provided timely reminders that they are all in form with strong efforts in the WAFL at the weekend.
Hansen kicked four goals in a dominant display at centre half-forward for Swan Districts against East Fremantle while Stenglein and Fletcher were part of a midfield unit which controlled the game for Subiaco against Perth.
All three ensured their names would again be bandied around at the selection table this week as the club looks for a combination to beat Collingwood on Saturday night.
Wingman Tim Houlihan was again in good touch for the Sharks while Nic Naitanui racked up more ground time and is working towards match fitness.
Swan Districts v East Fremantle
Ashley Hansen: Hansen was the dominant forward on the ground. Working with a midfield that controlled the game, Hansen marked strongly and worked up to the wings on a number of occasions. He finished off his day with four goals in a terrific performance.
Ryan Davis: Davis applied good physical pressure through the midfield and was strong over the ball. He used the football extremely well and did a good job on Riley Dunn and Conway in the midfield and in the back pocket.
Nic Naitanui: Naitanui rucked throughout and the experienced Lindsay probably had the better of the ruck dual. Naitanui worked hard, seemed to enjoy the hit out and will continue to pick up match fitness the more he plays.
Tony Notte: Notte started the game well, leading into space and looking dangerous around the contest. His three first half goals came from a couple of good set shots and a terrific snap. In the second half he faded a little, with just three possessions, but continues to build on his match conditioning.
Matt Spangher: Spangher started the game on Ash Hansen and did a good job rebounding for his team. Hansen got on top in the dual, and with a dominant midfield consistently pumping Swans forward, the East Fremantle defence was under enormous pressure. Spangher fought the game out, but Hansen won the battle.
Tim Houlihan: He played on a wing and continued his outstanding form of the past five or six weeks. Houlihan ran hard and kicked two very good running goals. While Swans’ midfielders dominated the game, Houlihan broke even with his opponent and was a good player for his team.
South Fremantle v Peel
Callum Wilson: Wilson’s best work was done in the forward line, where he provided a focal point in attack for his side. He made good position, led confidently and was quick off the mark . He marked with assurance and finished with 2.2. He was moved to defence in the third quarter and remained there for the rest of the match on Kane Robins, who had kicked four goals from centre half-forward for Peel. Wilson defended desperately, but Robbins was able to add two more goals for a match tally of six .
Jordan Jones: He played in defence in the first half (on Callum Wilson initially) before going forward in the third quarter, back in defence in the last quarter, and finally onto a wing. His use of handball in heavy traffic was quick and effective, was cool under pressure when gathering the ball and he hit targets with his handball.
Brad Ebert: He played in the midfield where he gathered 19 posessions , eight of them coming in the final quarter . He was good at times in congested space and was quick with his hands. He competed well and some of his reading of the play was good .
Ashley Arrowsmith: A serviceable performance on a wing and through the midfield, where he used handball creatively and was able to use it quickly and effectively in congested space. His pace was an asset and he competed well.
West Perth v Claremont
Liam Bedford: After a bright start, Bedford’s opponent fell on his ankle during a marking contest and he was taken from the ground. He played no further part in the game.
Tom Swift: A strong performance by Swift, where his work ethic was very good. He was strong in stoppages and around ground to be a good contributor for his team. Finished with 28 possessions and seven marks.
Lewis Stevenson: Strong at the football and efficient with his ball use, Stevenson was a good player for the Tigers. He played on a wing, as well as half-back and forward, demonstrating his ability to adapt to various roles.
Pat McGinnity: Good solid performance by McGinnity, who worked hard around stoppages and around the ground. He relished the contest and consistently put his body on the line. Accumulated 21 possessions in a hard-working display.
Subiaco v Perth
Tyson Stenglein: Stenglein produced a solid four-quarter effort in the midfield where he helped to create Subiaco’s dominance. Rang long and strong for 26 possessions in a consistent display throuhghout.
Chad Fletcher: Rewarded for a hard running effort with 35 possessions and along with Stenglein and others helped to establish Subiaco’s midfield advantage. His work rate was very good, consistent game with 17 possessions in first half and 18 in second half.
Will Sullivan: Played in the ruck on Douglas and was solid, with the exception of the third quarter when his work rate dropped away a little. Had 20 hit outs and seven marks and will continue to work on a four-quarter contribution.
Ashley Smith: Started on the interchange each quarter and came on at about the 10-minute mark. He played on a wing in the first three quarters and at half-back in the last term. Had 12 possessions and three marks from his limited ground time and will be looking to build on that going forward.
