The Department of Sport and Recreation-sponsored regional tour of the premiership cup has continued with successful visits to both Esperance and Bunbury.Veteran Drew Banfield joined full-forward Quinten Lynch and 1994 premiership player and community development officer David Hynes in Esperance on Tuesday, starting with a visit to Castletown Primary School before moving on to Our Lady Star of the Sea, Esperance Primary School and Nulsen Primary School.Originally from the nearby hamlet of Grasspatch, the ‘Big Unit’ - sporting a holiday goatee - thrived on the return to his town and they were thrilled to have him home. The reception was terrific; children asking plenty of questions as Banfield and Lynch provided insight into what it took to claim the club’s third premiership and the support received by the club in all corners of the State. Healthy eating and exercise were also hot topics.Hynes and the cup ventured to an aged care home in the afternoon where a very proud 102 year-old resident particularly enjoyed the opportunity to hold the prized silverware. Then it was off to the Bay of Isles Leisure Centre where Banfield and Lynch welcomed the start of pre-season training for Subiaco Football Club’s development squad and to Ports Oval for a public appearance. The pair signed for the 300 in attendance while the cup was given its own special post for supporters to get up close to it and have a photo.“The cup was extremely well received in Esperance,” Hynes said. “All of the schools were thrilled to have the cup and our two players along.“With a large section of the community at Ports Oval and a good session with Subi’s development squad, the whole day was a great success.”The cup travelled to Bunbury on Wednesday where schools program co-ordinator Kim Hannah joined Banfield and premiership star Adam Hunter for the day.Students at Carey Park and Bunbury primary schools were raring to go, decked in West Coast Eagles gear and playing the club song as their guests arrived. They were clearly thrilled to be included in the occasion.Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School students were equally wide-eyed; the entire group congregating for the presentation and their impressive questions matched with desired responses.Local boy Hunter was excellent, discussing the choices he had to make as a young man to follow his dream of playing AFL football while Banfield was his terrific, easy-going self in accommodating his audiences. With Bunbury Senior High School’s year 11 and 12 students finished for 2006, their year eight to 10 counterparts were pleased to still be in class and assembled as one for their visit. And to finish the day, over 500 people attended the community appearance at Centrepoint Shopping Centre. Some travelled from Collie and other towns to get there while others made the most of proximity to greet Banfield, Hunter and the popular cup.The tour will resume in Albany on Thursday, November 30 and Northam on Friday, December 1.
