As a leader Luke Shuey has always tried to set an example through his on-field actions. And against Port Adelaide he could have done little more.

The combative midfielder worked hard in and around the contest, crashing in and doing all he could to reverse the Eagles form slump. Unfortunately, it was not enough but he was brave and inspiring.

Shuey had 21 possessions, 12 kicks and nine handpasses, as well as five clearances as he led a midfield that improved its impact compared with the others games played on the Gold Coast. He received solid support from Nic Naitanui and Andrew Gaff, in particular, but as a collective they will need more to put a tick in the “W” column.

The next assignment is Richmond at Metricon on Thursday night, so the group will work hard to improve on the deficiencies over the next five days.
