Despite Australian and English sporting relations being on tenterhooks at the moment due England’s recent Ashes win, the West Coast Eagles welcomed some English Eagles fans into the nest on Saturday night to experience their first live AFL game.
Andrew Fleetwood and his two sons, Jack and Ben, from Leicester in England, became West Coast devotees when Aussie school teacher Andrew Jenkin spent three years teaching with Mr Fleetwood at Gartree High School in the UK.
As it turned out, Saturday was the perfect way to introduce the family to live AFL football, with a top-four clash against the reigning premiers in Hawthorn on show, as well as coinciding with AFL Multicultural Round.
They were treated to an inside look at match day, given access to the rooms pre-game and took in the excitement of the warm-up inside the Eagles’ inner-sanctum.
Jenkin, who acted as ‘tour guide’ on Saturday night, said despite the Eagles suffering a loss, the Brits thoroughly enjoyed their first AFL experience.
“Being really into their sport, they love a good contest and Saturday night against Hawthorn was certainly that,” Jenkin said.
“Seeing the professionalism and skill of the players close up as they warmed up in the rooms really inspired all of us before the game.
“My fondest memory though is of the two boys and Andy jumping out of their seats and cheering as one with the crowd when Josh Kennedy kicked a goal in the last quarter to put us in front.
“Despite the boys being disappointed in the result, it was a fantastic game of footy and a brilliant way to whet their appetite. They even compared it to an epic EPL game between Manchester United and Chelsea, two competition heavyweights.
“It will stay with me for a lifetime.”
The boys have now officially joined the club as members of the 'Eagles Nest' and will keep tabs on West Coast's progress for the remainder of 2015 and beyond.
