As a horde of West Coast Eagles fans watched a low-key session this morning, they might not have taken much notice of the young man wearing the No.19 guernsey.
He simply blended in with the rest of the squad on Domain Stadium working on specific skill acquisition, but for Damien Cavka it probably meant quite a deal more.
Cavka is the fourth member of the class of ’14, the fourth round selection in last November’s annual player ballot, who is a running machine. In pre-season he broke the long-standing club record for a 2km time trial.
But for the last couple of months he has battled a stress reaction in a foot and remains on the rehabilitation trail. As such he has become something of a forgotten entity as fellow draftees Tom Lamb, Jackson Nelson and Liam Duggan have forced their way into senior football.
For Cavka it’s tiny steps forward as he takes aim at having an impact in the second half of the season and being on the track is a positive development, having dispensed with the moon boot he had to wear from around the start of this season.
A young man who pays attention to every detail around his preparation, the club is looking forward to seeing what he can produce, initially at East Perth when he gets the medical green light to start playing in the next five or six weeks.
His presence was encouraging and so, too, was that of 2012 Club Champion Scott Selwood, who is stepping up his preparation towards an imminent return from an ankle injury.
