Luke Webster says stripping back East Perth's game plan has been central to the Royals’ recent turnaround.
After losing their first five games of the season, East Perth responded with a five-game winning streak, which was only halted by league leaders Subiaco at the weekend.
The senior coach said a shift in mentality was at the heart of the club’s form reversal.
“That first game against Subiaco was our worst performance of the year,” Webster told Sport FM.
“It was a game where we felt we didn’t bring the required intent and work rate to play four strong quarters. We have changed and simplified a few things since that day, to ensure the players have a real simple mindset that’s focused on bringing a good work rate and having that for four quarters.
“By simplifying things, it’s allowing them to go out and play on instinct and not worry too much on structure, which is great to see. It was there all along, it was just about putting four quarters together and we did in in the five-game winning streak.
“We will reset and continue to focus in on the brand we brought over the past five weeks and hopefully we will get the results.”
While Webster admits the on-field fluctuations have been frustrating during his first season as senior coach, he said the opportunity to lead a club that he has strong family ties to has been rewarding.
“It’s been really exciting and I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said.
“A lot of the people who support the club were here when my father played, or when my brother and I played, and there’s still a couple of fans around from when my grandfather played. It’s great to come back to a traditional club, and a club which has so much passion for the jumper.
“It’s been challenging with the on-field ups and downs, but I’m really enjoying it. I’m looking forward to the second half of the year and we have good continuity in the group and hopefully the results follow.”
The Royals will look to get back on the winners’ list against Swan Districts this Saturday and Webster is anticipating a strong effort throughout the contest.
“They’re a quality outfit,” he said.
“I know they’ve lost their past two games, but they’ve been really solid. We are expecting a quality outfit will roll out. They have players who are in good form and we need to play our best to get the result.
“Hopefully our boys bring our brand and play a good, hard four quarters and we get the result on the weekend.”
