While the majority of the West Coast Eagles squad is gearing up for Saturday’s preliminary final clash with Melbourne, one player cannot help but wonder what might transpire at Optus Stadium on Sunday morning.
First-year rookie Callan England will take to Perth’s new sporting cauldron the day after the Eagles’ battle with the Demons to try and win a premiership with East Perth’s reserves side.
The Royals will go to war with Subiaco after qualifying for the big dance via a stunning semi-final victory over the Lions a fortnight ago.
East Perth trailed Subiaco by 50 points midway through the second quarter but came to life before the half-time break and booted 13 goals to the Lions’ three for the remainder of the match to clinch a stunning seven-point victory.
“We should go into the game feeling pretty confident having come back from that huge deficit in the semi-final,” England said.
“We were 51-1 down at one point and came back and won by seven points. It was a pretty unreal win.
“If we start well and kick the first couple of goals it will be a completely different game.”
Subiaco reigned supreme in the clubs’ two regular season clashes, but England believes East Perth has what it takes to topple the minor premiers this weekend – as long as they stick to their tried and tested game plan.
“Subiaco pride themselves on being a one-on-one side really, so if we win the contest, which we have done well all year, that should put us in good stead,” England said.
“Sometimes we get caught in the trap of trying to play too much like other teams do, but if we play our way we’ll be good enough to get the win.”
The two teams will lock horns at the unusual time of 8.40am after the West Australian Football Commission made a late call to play the reserves Grand Final at Optus Stadium.
England said East Perth had been holding training sessions at the crack of dawn to prepare for the early start time.
“I trained with the boys on Saturday and that was our prep for Sunday in a sense, because we were at Leederville at 7.10am,” he said.
“It was so cold, but we got to experience what it would be like on game day.
“We’re ready for the conditions and raring to go.”
