Ruck recruit Matt Flynn is looking forward to building synergy with sidekick Bailey Williams and his new West Coast teammates after finally getting to pull on the blue and gold against St Kilda.

After heading west from the Giants for more opportunity, Flynn suffered a tough setback on the eve of the season when a tendon detached from his knee during an innocuous training drill.

The Eagles held the 26-year-old back until he was ready and after one WAFL Eagles victory Flynn came into the AFL side.

“It was awesome. It wasn’t the way I wanted to start my time at the Eagles to have 12 or 13 weeks on the sidelines but to finally get out there and play with everyone to build that connection was amazing,” Flynn said.

“It would’ve been great to get the win, but it was good to get out there with everyone.

“Three or four weeks ago I felt good to go and I was doing a lot of match sim and a big training block.

“I felt good but nothing really replicates a game, so I’ll be better for that one, but definitely felt ready.”

Williams has held his own in the ruck admirably without Flynn and, after starting in the first centre bounce against Rowan Marshall on Saturday, took most of the restarts in the middle.

“I think we’re still working on that one. Initially early in the year before I got injured I was probably going to take more and Baz would do 30 or 40 per cent but he’s doing some really good stuff in there now,” Flynn said.

“We might look at that over the next few weeks and keep working on that synergy there.

“On the weekend Baz did about 70 per cent of them and I did about 30 or 40 per cent, but we’ll look at that going forward and building that synergy as we play more footy with each other.”

Flynn is also further integrating himself into the club by coaching the AFLW rucks this year after new head coach Daisy Pearce approached him about a role.

“Doing some stuff with the two Wakfer sisters (Lauren and Zoe), Sarah Lakay, and some key position stuff too. I was here last night for their first official pre-season session and joined in there, so it was good fun, I’m enjoying it,” he said.

“(Daisy) is awesome. She’s got a wealth of knowledge. She worked at Geelong as a coach as well. She comes across here as a new head coach, so she’s learning as well, btu she’s been amazing.”
