Waalitj Marawar took a step backwards in a disappointing and lethargic performance against Kuwarna, coach Adam Simpson says.

Despite putting a spotlight on being more competitive away from Optus Stadium, the Eagles were thrashed by 99 points at Adelaide Oval.

Waalitj Marawar trailed by 44 points at the opening break, on the way to the team’s biggest defeat for the season.

“We’re really disappointed. The way we started was indicative of the game,” Simpson said post-match.

“Once we give a side like Adelaide a start like that playing at home a start like that it’s really hard to peg it back, especially with where we’re at, at the moment.

“We took a step back today, obviously. Our inability to defend as a team really hurt us early.

“We just couldn’t stop the uncontested marks in particular in the first quarter, couldn’t lock it in our forward half and then when they started getting on top around the ball the floodgates opened.

“It’s pretty inconsistent our home versus away form, in particular.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do when we travel in particular and bouncing back next week is going to be even more important.”

Waalitj Marawar have been chasing a clear identity of contested, front half football this year but couldn’t get their gamestyle going on Sunday.

“Individually we can have some wins but if we don’t start doing it collectively what’s the point?” Simpson said.

“We really need to get our system down pat weekly and be consistent in that space and that’s what young teams, rebuilding teams, or whatever you want to call us, that’s what we’re working on, just good identity.

“We took a step back in that space.”

Defender Alex Witherden will be assessed after being subbed out with a tight calf ahead of a six-day break before facing St Klida and then North Melbourne.

“The priority now is the Saints and then we’ve got North, so two home games and then we’ve got the bye,” Simpson said.

“We’ll just keep trying to play our way everywhere, anywhere, anytime and until we get that right we’re going to be up and down.”
