It was not match winning in the end, but it was definitely game changing.
Captain Luke Shuey was occasionally used off half-back last year but there were stronger indications in pre-season that he will spend longer periods in the rebounding defensive role this season.
Deep into the second quarter against North Melbourne he switched to defence and remained there for the rest of the game.
He helped swing the momentum back in the Eagles favour with his energy and experience, finishing with 27 possessions, including seven contested and he also laid eight tackles – four fewer than the best from young teammate Reuben Ginbey.
Shuey also gained 595 metres through his possessions and kicked the team’s last goal deep into the final term to keep his team in the hunt for four precious round one premiership points.
Ultimately, it was not to be, but if Shuey’s performance is any indicator we will need to grow accustomed to seeing him off half-back.
