The West Coast Eagles hit the bullseye again when they addressed the pressing need to bring a young ruckman onto the list when securing South Australian big man Harry Barnett on day two of the draft.
The 202cm prospect from West Adelaide was a priority for Eagles recruiting staff last night and when GWS nominated versatile Oakleigh Chargers star Max Gruzewski with the opening salvo of night two of the NAB National draft, the door was open.
GWS resisted offers from several clubs to trade pick 22 and instead drafted one of their draft targets as they continued to add to their bounty which began with No.1 selection Aaron Cadman.
Barnett will join other emerging big men at the club – Bailey Williams and Callum Jamieson – as they support champion ruckman Nic Naitanui.
Regarded as the best tall prospect in the draft, Barnett is an athletic big man who can also push forward and be dangerous in attack.
The Eagles, with their strongest draft hand in years, then secured Victoria Country midfielder/forward Coby Burgiel with their fourth selection at No.29.
In doing so the Eagles completed the wish list with their first four selections, with tonight’s draftees joining first round recruits Reuben Ginbey and Elijah Hewitt.
Burgiel is a pacy and classy ball user from Maffra who is a smart decision maker and has the capacity to hit the scoreboard.
The good fortune continued for the Eagles when they were able to pick classy small forward Noah Long with their final selection which became No.58 after a string of clubs passed late in the draft.
Long was rated highly by the Eagles and they were delighted when the Bendigo youngster drifted to the tail end of the ballot.
The upshot of two days of activity is that the Eagles have added three quality midfielders, an exciting big man and a small forward with innate goal sense.
The draft process concludes tomorrow with the rookie draft.
