Rowan’s Walk aims to raise awareness for suicide prevention, promote mental wellness and remember those who lost their lives to suicide.
Bringing the community together, Rowan’s Walk has reached many people throughout the Pilbara and is now in its 5th year in Hedland.
After BHP and the West Coast Eagles participated in the 2021 walk as part of our BHP Role Model Visit, they made a commitment to return in 2022.
In partnership with BHP, West Coast Eagles player Josh Rotham joined AFL Sports Ready Trainee Rory Charles and Pilbara based staff Hamish Coulton and Clint Degebrodt to support the event.
Assisting the junior competition with coaching and umpiring, combining with local youth to play in the tournament and umpiring several senior women’s games were all part of the BHP Role Model Visit fun.
Rowan’s walk volunteer Sam Anderson expressed how the event is a terrific way to share Rowan’s Walk message of mental wellness through participation.
“It’s great to have the Eagles here with us, supporting the walk, the message and just being around to help out,” said Sam.
“The kids loved it and so many people got a photo with Rotham.
“Running the kids’ competition was a lifesaver, we are all just keen Mum’s so having the Eagles help was perfect.”
West Coast Eagles and BHP work together to bring players and staff from the Club to join regional staff over nine visits including Port Hedland, Newman, Kalgoorlie and Leinster each year.
The club acknowledges Youth Engagement Partner BHP for supporting the visit and looks forward to extending the club’s connection to these communities as part of its regional expansion across WA.
