Football legend David Wirrpanda and the team led and supported a range of activities during school holidays, working collaboratively with community organisations focusing on youth engagement.

One of these collaborative activities was the Multisport Carnival Day hosted by the Hedland Aboriginal Youth Sport Connect Initiative (HAYSCI). HAYSCI is a joint venture led by WA Cricket, involving Basketball WA and the West Australian Football Commission, focussed on providing physical activity and leadership development opportunities to Hedland youth.

Eagles Youth Engagement Coordinator Clint Degebrodt has been instrumental in facilitating this project within the Town of Port Hedland.

The team led the participants through football activities with support from the Royal Life Saving Society of WA’s Talent Pool leaders, before a game of cricket with by WA Cricket along with Wirrpanda.

The premiership player showed his skills weren’t limited to on field, rolling the arm over with style and precision and proving difficult to put away.

An Eagles Freestyle Footy session was held at Hedland Senior High School oval in the evening, with community members of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels joining in on the action.

The Eagles Freestyle Footy program is designed with inclusion and diversity in mind, catering for people from all walks of life in a fun, social, active lifestyle program. This session was instrumental in uncovering some interest from punters new to the game, who now call themselves Eagles fans.

Our Junior and Youth Coaching clinics took place at JD Hardie Youth & Community Hub, with ever-popular Eagles mascot, Rick the Rock Eagle making a special appearance.

The Eagles Role Model visit culminated with the official opening party of the JD Hardie Youth & Community Hub outdoor basketball courts – a marquee community event that brought together the community through sport.

The West Coast Eagles are proud to work in partnership with Youth Engagement Partner BHP to bring players and staff from the Club to the communities of Port Hedland, Newman, Kalgoorlie and Leinster nine times a year.

These visits complement full-time, regionally based West Coast Eagles community and game development staff who work day-to-day in regional towns across the state to unite, connect and excite communities through the ongoing delivery of social impact programs.
