The backline colossus started the year in incredible form, dominating matches from the defensive half of the ground in the manner that earned him four All-Australian blazers.
Between rounds two-to-four, McGovern was in everything as the Eagles defence stood up in the face of a challenging start to the year.
Unfortunately, the dreaded Health and Safety Protocols ruled the No.20 out of round five against Sydney and the following clash with Port Adelaide.
A five-game run thereafter was as long as McGovern featured for the year. He was subbed out with a back injury in the loss to the Dogs in round 11 and then suffered a nasty season-ending rib injury against Geelong upon his return after the mid-season bye.
Standout performance: Performing against the Pies
Any of McGovern’s efforts against North Melbourne (18 disposals, nine marks), Fremantle (21, 11) or Collingwood (22, eight) are worthy nominations as the big man delivered when the Eagles’ backs were against the wall in the opening month.
But his exploits against the Magpies contributed to an all-too-rare victory in round four, when he combined with gun full-back Tom Barrass to form an impassable aerial wall.
McGovern led all comers with 11 intercepts, including five intercept marks, and had five rebound 50s as the Eagles held on for an unforgettable triumph over an eventual preliminary finalist.
