The classy midfielder had to deal with numerous setbacks in 2022 - and missed five matches due to a combination of injury, suspension, illness and the AFL Health and Safety Protocols - but still produced a quality campaign worthy of a third-placed finish in the John Worsfold Medal.
Kelly appeared in ripping condition heading into the season, only for a stint in isolation to slow him down. After one game back against North Melbourne in round two, Kelly then suffered a hamstring injury at training on the eve of the RAC Derby, which cost him two more matches.
It was that sort of year for the Eagles, although Kelly soon built into his campaign and could hold his head high during the difficult first half of the season.
His 31 disposals in a heavy loss to Port Adelaide in round six came against the tide, while he also performed admirably in big home defeats against Melbourne (32 disposals) and the Bulldogs (38, one goal).
Despite being targeted by opposition taggers, Kelly finished the year strongly – averaging more than 27 disposals in his final three matches.
Played his 50th game for the club in round 18 against Hawthorn and will only benefit from more support around him entering his fourth season back in the west next year.
Standout performance: Taking it to the Tigers
Fresh off their second win for the year against Essendon, the somewhat rejuvenated Eagles went toe-to-toe with Richmond for three quarters at the MCG, and Kelly’s ability to impact the game forward of centre was a significant factor.
In a dazzling display, the 28-year-old dominated with 40 disposals, a game-high 10 score involvements, nine clearances and two goals.
Few Eagles, possibly except retiring hero Josh Kennedy in his eight-goal final game, reached greater heights in a single match for the season.
