A group of West Coast greats – led by two-time premiership captain and 2006 flag-winning coach John Worsfold – showed their support for the Eagles’ current group in a sign of solidarity at training on Thursday morning.
Worsfold was joined by Darren Glass, Michael Brennan, Tony Evans, Andrew Embley, Ashley Sampi and Drew Banfield speaking to the players and coaches before main training at Mineral Resources Park ahead of Sunday’s trip to face Greater Western Sydney.
Worsfold - one of three West Coast premiership coaches along with Mick Malthouse (1992 and 1994) and Adam Simpson (2018) - addressed the players before they trained in the club's Sir Doug Nicholls Round guernsey.
“We just had a few old premiership players and older players just come down to say it’s a tough time for the club but we’re all behind you,” Worsfold told westcoasteagles.com.au.
“We know this club’s got a great record for coming out of these tough spots in a really strong position and we know they’ll do it again.
“We had guys like Michael Brennan and Tony Evans from the inaugural premierships, and then Andrew Embley and Darren Glass from the 2006 premiership team down here as well.
“Just great to see a few of those old boys, all ready to come.”
Worsfold, who has the Eagles’ club champion award named in his honour, said past players were right behind the club as it works through a challenging phase.
“We had other players who couldn’t get away from their current roles to get down here, but all sent their support to say we’re right behind the club,” he said.
“Generally, deep down you know people are supporting you, but just seeing them does solidify, makes it clear that these guys have gone out of their way to stick their faces in say ‘G’day’ and show their support.”
