Give us your thoughts on the game?
We’re clearly not at the level at the moment, there’s so many areas to fix, it’s going to take time. Unfortunately, tonight we butchered the ball and the turnover game, we were unable to defend behind our mistakes. And then they got on top in the midfield, and then they got really brave and put us to the sword, so we’ve got a lot of work to do.
At home, that must hurt a lot.
Of course it does, nobody wants to be in this situation. But we are, so got to own it, accept it and get better. Like I said, it’s not going to happen in one week, it’s going to be a lot of work in front of us, that’s in everything we do, our program, our fitness, our style of play, our ball movement, all the things that we have identified. We’re on a path, and there’s going to be a little bit of pain, and we’ve got to look for some small wins in the next few weeks. We’ve got a reasonably tough couple of weeks coming up, Brisbane in Brisbane and then Melbourne, so we’re really disappointed, we’re disappointed for our fans and members that have come and watched us tonight, we’re aware of the situation, we’re going to do everything we can to get that right.
How to you galvanise the group before Brisbane at the Gabba?
This is how you learn to be resilient, we need to stick together, obviously there’s going to be some criticism and we deserve it, so we need to keep ourselves tight.
Using 42 players across six rounds, this hasn’t happened in 100 years, have you ever seen anything like this?
We just can’t look back, we can give you reasons and excuses, but we’ve got to look forward. Our next month of football, two months, the whole season, we’ve got to get better. So regardless of what’s happened, we can’t control that. We can control our future, so we need to stay strong and resilient behind that. And like I said, we just can’t look back anymore, that’s the way it is.
Where are you at right now?
No doubt we’re in transition, absolutely, but we still need leadership, we still need ‘JK’ (Josh Kennedy) at the moment, we still need Shannon Hurn, and there’s plenty of room for our kids at the moment, with what we’ve got, so we’ve exposed 37 players so far this year, five WAFL players, so there’s going to be plenty of opportunity to get some games into some of our younger players and see where they’re at. See what we can do to assess our list in the next 15 weeks, there’s going to be plenty of opportunity for the younger players to come through and we’ll get a pretty clear picture of where we’re at, at the end of the year.
How long do you expect this to last?
We have obviously deviated a fair bit from three years ago, and no one wants to be in the situation we’re in right now, but we are, so the quicker we can accept what’s happening and be aware of it and action it to improve, the better we’ll get. So, this hasn’t been just tonight, it’s been here for most of the year, and regardless of what’s happened, we are in a period of transition, no doubt.
