Practice matches, or match simulation in this instance, always mean more to some than others.
At Mineral Resources Park today, the West Coast Eagles had a solid hit-out in muggy conditions with a band of senior players doing all they needed and some of the fringe players ensuring they caught the eye.
As the squad moves to match play it comes as a virtual signal that pre-season ends and the start of the 2022 campaign looms. It has been a long, demanding summer and generally they are in good shape.
In an abbreviated four-quarter hit-out, veteran forward Josh Kennedy and midfielder Tim Kelly set the tone early; Sam Petrevksi-Seton was lively through the middle and experienced defenders Shannon Hurn, Tom Barrass and Jeremy McGovern chopped off everything within their grasp.
At the same time Andrew Gaff, Jack Redden, Elliot Yeo, Nic Naitanui and Jack Petruccelle did what they needed to do.
Some of the senior players who had done enough to satisfy coaching and fitness staff within the contest, drifted off to the second oval and finished off the session with designated running.
Of the young brigade forward-ruckman Bailey Williams was under notice, Campbell Chesser and Brady Hough looked good and Alex Witherden did all that was required of him. Isiah Winder did some exciting things, Jamaine Jones continues to build on an impressive summer and Luke Foley showed trademark composure.
Four players pushing to impress and earn a possible SSP rookie spot were also prominent with key forwards Tyler Keitel and Hugh Dixon having good moments, while rebounding defender Toby McQuilkin and Tom Blechynden were under notice.
Unfortunately, classy forward Jamie Cripps suffered a shoulder injury in the third quarter and was sent for scans.
