The stunning resurgence of Nic Naitanui has again been recognised by All-Australian selectors, with the superstar ruckman in the mix to claim back-to-back team of the year blazers.
Naitanui has been named in the 40-man All-Australian squad for the fourth time in his career, and on Thursday night could receive his third blazer if he is selected in the final 22.
The 31-year-old was previously All-Australian in 2012 and last year, when he dominated the condensed 17-game season and shortened matches.
But on the return to full-length quarters this year the marquee big man maintained his remarkable form and influence, while playing all 22 home and away matches for the first time since 2010.
Although it was an up-and-down year for West Coast, Naitanui was the model of consistency and led the AFL ruck cohort in hitouts to advantage, centre clearances, stoppage clearances, contested possessions, inside 50s and score launches.
In just his second full season back from his second knee reconstruction, the high-flying 202cm Eagle also climbed to the top of the Official AFL Player Ratings, surging clear of Marcus Bontempelli as the No.1 ranked player in the game.
Fittingly, Naitanui capped the season with a brilliant performance when the most was at stake with the Eagles needing to upset Brisbane at the Gabba to stay in the finals race.
With his trademark deft ruck work and ground-level ferocity on full display, Naitanui won a career-high 53 hit-outs and equal best 11 clearances to lead the charge.
He also finished with 24 disposals – one shy of his best tally in 205 matches in blue and gold – and ended the season as the hot favourite to clinch his second John Worsfold Medal at next month’s club champion awards night.
The Therabody All-Australian selection panel is Gillon McLachlan (non-voting Chairman), Andrew Dillon, Chris Johnson, Glen Jakovich, Warren Tredrea, Cameron Ling, Jude Bolton, Matthew Richardson, Nick Riewoldt and Kevin Bartlett.
