Young cancer survivors Chloe Cutts, Jayden Dalton and Kayden Gaffney joined some of their West Coast heroes this afternoon to launch Dig Deep Day 2008, the football club’s annual fundraising day for the Cancer Council Western Australia.

The West Coast Eagles hopes to raise $125,000 for the Cancer Council this year through the sale of new ‘Dig Deep’ mobile phone socks which are the latest product to be sold in the club’s fundraising efforts for the Cancer Council.

A total of $320,000 has been raised since the partnership began in 2005 and has encouraged generous West Coast fans to show their support for their team and the Cancer Council by purchasing popular wristbands and car flags.

Importantly, the proceeds from last year’s ‘Dig Deep Day’ fundraising allowed the West Coast Eagles to fund significant research into improving treatment for lung cancer and a project looking at the benefits of exercise for men being treated for prostate cancer.

This afternoon, Chloe, Jayden and Kayden teamed up with Darren Glass, Dean Cox, Tyson Stenglein, Matt Priddis, Adam Hunter and Jaymie Graham in a race to spell out “Dig Deep” with the new phone socks.

Timekeeper Beau Waters announced Chloe’s team the winner, but everyone agreed it was a very close call.

“Cancer affects so many people and I think with new developments in research there are some parts of it that can be prevented which is the exciting part, so hopefully we can change a few people’s lives,” he said.

“This is my third year being involved. I met Chloe last year and we’ve formed a bond. It’s a bit selfish, but it gives me a lift to see her looking so healthy and buoyant.

“It definitely puts things into perspective, it puts the game into perspective. Life’s a very important thing and something to be treasured. I’m very appreciative of what I’ve been given and the endeavours of the club in trying to make a small change. I feel as though we’re definitely making a difference.”

The phone socks are $5 and will be available at the following outlets: Vodafone, Video Ezy, NAB, Medibank Private, Toyota WA, SGIO, the West Coast Eagles Team Store and the Cancer Council Subiaco store.

Volunteers will also be out in force selling the socks at the round 17 clash with St Kilda at Subiaco Oval on Saturday, July 26, which is ‘Dig Deep Day’. The aim is to sell 25,000 of the phone socks.
