West Coast captain Luke Shuey is set to take some part in Friday’s match simulation after overcoming a calf strain, however smooth-moving midfielder Tim Kelly will briefly slow down his impressive pre-season following a thumb injury.
Kelly was in and out of training on Tuesday and completed some individual running work while the Eagles finished the session with game-related drills.
“Tim pulled up sore with a thumb injury (from last Friday's session) and we’re just getting that all checked out at the moment so as to firm up the prognosis,” General Manager – Football Craig Vozzo told westcoasteagles.com.au.
“There’s a bit of swelling we need to get down and it will affect his ball-handling.
“He’ll have a slow week and we’ll work out exactly what it is, but we’re not fearing anything that will cause a long-term issue for Tim.”
The Eagles have been buoyed seeing Shuey ramp up his workload following a calf niggle, while vice-captain Josh Kennedy is also building after a similar complaint.
“Luke is good. You would have seen him on the track flying around this week. He’s almost fully ticked off (medically),” Vozzo said.
“Likely to have some game minutes later in the week, and so far so good for a full recovery.
“Josh has had a soleus strain – so a calf strain – which he’s working through. He’s probably progressing a bit slower than we would’ve hoped for, but he’s got a good base of fitness to this point in time so we’ll take a slower approach.
“He’s one of our veterans and we want to get that right so he’s ready to go when the whips are cracking as we start playing games in a few weeks.”
Meanwhile, two-time John Worsfold medallist Elliot Yeo remains on track for an early-season return from his osteitis pubis issue.
“Yeoy’s tracking quite well. We’ve had a slower two-week period. We wound him back a bit,” Vozzo said.
“He was having some pain in that pubic area with the OP that he’s got. Nothing that was unexpected, but a delay, so he’ll ramp up over the next few days.
“He had a running session yesterday (Tuesday) as well and we’ll elevate his kicking and change of direction from there, but we’re confident we’re heading in the right direction.”
The Eagles expect defender Jackson Nelson (hamstring) and tall Bailey Williams (quad) will be back training in about a week, while speedster Jack Petruccelle isn’t far away either from a slight hamstring strain.
“(Petruccelle) had a history obviously last year with that sort of injury on the other leg, so we’ve taken a conservative approach,” Vozzo said.
“He’ll have a quieter 14 days from here as he builds into full fitness, but he’s had a really good pre-season so we won’t be set back too far.”
Mark Hutchings (Iliotibial band) is about a month away from full training after recent surgery, while premiership teammate Daniel Venables is taking encouraging steps back from his long-term concussion.
“Dan’s progressing well. You would have seen him in a lot more drills over the last week or two where the ball is flying around, teammates flying around,” Vozzo said.
“Haven’t got the sign-off yet on full contact work but the training that he has done has been really encouraging. We haven’t set a timeframe or a date. It will be slow, symptom-based type set up.
“He’s probably, as I said before, 95 per cent where he needs to be but we need to tick every box before he starts contact work.”
Mobile forward Jake Waterman will participate in more training over the coming week as he continues to recover from a nagging back issue, and young ruck Callum Jamieson (groin) is set to elevate his training as he prepares for upcoming games.
