Opportunities have been difficult to generate for the players on the periphery of the senior team, but they continue to apply pressure through the quality of their work in the WAFL.

Players like midfielder Tom Swift, half-back Brett Jones, utility player Jordan Jones, wingmen Tim Houlihan and Bradd Dalziell and defender Brad Sheppard continue to send the message that if a chance presents, they will be ready to play.

Dalziell and Swift, in particular, have been in terrific touch, generating plenty of football and working on areas of their game that need attention.

Swift had 36 possessions for Claremont against Peel last Saturday and did much to steer his side to victory.

Brett Jones was also outstanding off half-back, resuming after a two week absence with a knee injury, and his experience has been a key factor in the Tigers’ form all season. He had 26 possessions and five marks while his communication and organisation in the back half is clearly evident.

While Claremont won the game comfortably, Jordan Jones was probably Peel’s best player. Working through the midfield and resting forward, he had 20 possessions, six marks, five tackles and finished off his game with two goals.

The East Fremantle contingent was again prominent, although beaten by Subiaco, and is now facing a virtual elimination final against South Fremantle this week.

Dalziell again worked hard on his wing, Tim Houlihan has placed a heavy emphasis on the defensive side of his game, which means he has sacrificed statistical dominance in the interest of rounding out his game, but he was again a highly influential player.

Sheppard, playing at half-back and on a wing, continues to develop nicely with 17 possessions and a goal. His defensive effort was strong and used the ball efficiently. Mitch Brown played in a defensive post for the Sharks and was not as influential as he has been in other games.

Good news also came in the Perth-East Perth clash with experienced defender Sam Butler getting through the game unscathed after missing four weeks with a calf injury. He was an important player in the Demons victory and will be looking to build on his 16-possession, six-mark hit-out.

Three West Coast players also played reserves for Claremont and were important factors in a 224-point thrashing of Peel.

Small forward Lewis Broome kicked six goals, Anton Hamp took 11 marks and kicked four goals, while Jeremy McGovern had slightly less impact, but had 13 possessions and kicked a goal, playing deep forward.
