After being challenged early by the travelling Saints, the side regained control of the match during the second half, and coasted to a 25-point victory against the plucky St Kilda outfit.
But the club recorded a huge success off the field as well, collecting 9,191 meals for WA’s homeless through the Cans For A Cause campaign, led on the day by past greats of the West Coast Eagles.
The charity initiative was founded by Don Pyke and encourages West Coast fans to bring a can of food to the game to be donated to Foodbank WA, the state’s largest hunger relief organisation.
In return for the generosity, Eagles supporters were good hard dose of nostalgia with Eagles greats including Drew Banfield, Michael Braun, Michael Brennan, Rowan Jones, Brett Jones, David Hart, Ashley McIntosh, Dwayne Lamb and Craig Turley at the ground on match day accepting donations.
Michael Brennan, who has took over the reins after Pyke became an assistant to Adam Simpson, says the result if reflective of the tremendous community spirit at the West Coast Eagles Football Club.
“We collected a total of 6,893 kilos of canned food on Saturday,” Brennan said.
“That is equivalent of over 9,000 meals. It sets a new record as Foodbank’s biggest one-day food collection ever.
“We still have collections from Woolworths Subiaco to be added to this total, which is a truly outstanding result.
“They’ll now donate it to more than 1,200 charities and 420 schools, and also distribute it to adults and children in need.
“We are very fortunate as a club to have such generous and supportive members.”
The West Coast Eagles would like to thank all members and fans who donated canned goods on Saturday and helped make Cans For A Cause a huge success.
