Four-time All Australian defender Jeremy McGovern will face a test on his fractured thumb at main training on Wednesday night after missing Sunday’s big win over Collingwood.
McGovern failed to come up after the RAC Derby in time to face the Pies but is a chance to take his place in another blockbuster against the third-placed Cats.
“It was a bit sore this week. We’ll try and get up for Geelong in this coming week, but it was a bit sore and we just thought it wasn’t worth the risk,” McGovern told 96FM.
“It’s pretty important your thumb – especially for my game. We’ll see how we go this week.”
After two weeks leading the side in Luke Shuey’s absence, McGovern watched from the sidelines as the Eagles handed out a stunning 66-point thrashing to Collingwood.
Shuey was influential in his comeback from a hamstring strain, while champion spearhead Josh Kennedy continued his resurgence with seven-straight majors.
“He had one of those days. Most of our forwards did. I think our midfield and forward line group really stood up,” McGovern said.
“As much as I love to pump the backs up, I love to give the mids and forwards a fair bit of a pump up this week, they got the ball going our way.
“The boys played really well. The scoreboard obviously reflected that but I think we just played a brand of footy that we wanted. Proud of the boys.”
The Eagles coaching group gave Kennedy top votes in the AFL Coaches Association award, just ahead of Tim Kelly after his 29-disposal, one-goal effort.
“I think we gave Josh the five (votes) and Tim the four. It was a flip of the coin really,” Adam Simpson told Channel Seven.
“I think he’s (Kennedy) obviously a victim of our ball movement really. I think the last month we’ve had a lot more supply, the ball movement has been a bit better and he has got on the end of some really good midfield work.
“His running profile, the numbers he’s producing on his GPS are just as good as they ever were.
“Fingers crossed he can continue that form.”
