The generosity of West Coast Eagles supporters was on show at the club’s round 15 match against St Kilda, with fundraising efforts on game day helping the club to raise over $100,000 for the Cancer Council WA during the 2009 Dig Deep campaign, a momentous achievement for all involved.
Every year since the charity partnership was formed in 2005, the West Coast Eagles have joined forces with the Cancer Council WA through the annual Dig Deep fundraiser to help in the fight against our country’s biggest killer.
This year saw the return of the ever popular Dig Deep wristband, a third blue and gold edition to the 2005 and 2006 versions, sold from June 2 to July 12.
The six-week campaign came to a head at the club’s round 15 game against St Kilda at Subiaco Oval, dubbed Dig Deep Day, where Eagles supporters attending the match were encouraged to wear yellow, the colour of hope, and purchase a Dig Deep wristband for $3. Through the support of our members, Dig Deep Day was hugely successful, raising just under $30,000 on the match day alone.
As a further show of support for the club’s endeavours, the umpires adorned yellow uniforms and the goal umpires waved yellow flags during the game.
All of the money raised from the campaign will stay in Western Australia and help the Cancer Council WA fund important cancer research projects, provide education on cancer prevention and provide much needed support and care for people with cancer and their families.
Cancer Council WA ambassador and West Coast hard man Beau Waters said it was great to see so many Western Australians dig deep into their pockets for this worthy cause.
“The wristbands were a fantastic way for fans to show their support for the fight against cancer, and they look great too,” Waters said.
Since establishing the charity partnership five years ago, the West Coast Eagles have raised over $500,000 for the Cancer Council WA, a contribution the club is extremely proud to have made to assist in the ongoing fight against cancer.
West Coast sincerely thanks everyone who dug deep and supported the 2009 campaign with special thanks to our distribution partners:
