When the West Coast Eagles take on the Brisbane Lions in round 18, the club will be dedicating the match to raising funds for Cancer Council WA.
The annual fundraising initiative, which has been dubbed ‘Dig Deep Day’, sees the West Coast Eagles urge members and fans to support the fight against cancer by purchasing Dig Deep wristbands with all proceeds going towards cancer research.
But as well as raising funds for Cancer Council WA, Dig Deep Day is also about providing a special experience for some very brave children.
Every Dig Deep Day, a courageous young patient from Cancer Council WA gets to be the West Coast Eagles mascot for the day and run through the banner with the team. This year, the Dig Deep mascot is nine-year-old William.
William was diagnosed with leukaemia four years ago, but after several years of intensive chemotherapy and treatment, is now in remission and on the road to recovery. And last week, William got to pay a visit to some of his West Coast Eagles heroes.
Beau Waters and Mark LeCras hosted William and his family as they visited the club for a tour of the Eagles facilities and a kick on Patersons Stadium.
Waters, who is the club’s Dig Deep ambassador, also presented William with his West Coast Eagles kit which he will wear when he runs out with the team on Dig Deep Day.
“It’s an important day and really puts playing footy into perspective,” the vice-captain said.
“Cancer is something which affects many Australians and to see William running around on Patersons Stadium after what he’s been through is quite inspiring.”
