Young Eagles fly to Asia
Jamie Cripps will join a group of his new teammates in Cambodia for an induction camp that will mix team building and community service
WEST Coast recruit Jamie Cripps will join a young group of his new teammates in Cambodia for an induction camp that will mix team building and community service.
One week before they start pre-season training, West Coast has sent nine players - including young stars Jack Darling and Andrew Gaff - on the five-day trip.
The young Eagles, who will be joined by coach John Worsfold and senior Eagle Mark Nicoski, arrived on Friday and will return on Tuesday night with pre-season training set to start on Friday.
The Eagles last visited Cambodia in 2010, with leadership and professional development coach Peter Worsfold leading a young group of players on a trip designed to broaden the players' experience and make a difference to the communities they visited.
The group built houses at an orphanage, and fundraising led by chaplain Paul Morrison - who penned a song about the experience - has since seen a school built.
Peter Worsfold said the club wanted its induction program to test the young players physically and challenge them mentally, with the first trip to Cambodia deemed a great success.
"The impact on the players after the first trip was excellent," Worsfold said.
"To have the first and second-year players do it meant that we would be moulding a culture that says we will roll our sleeves up and do the hard work on-field, but we'll also give back to the community or give back to people and enjoy doing that together.
"We had lots of reflection sessions while we were over there and it was clear to the coaches over there that it was making a difference to them individually and as a group.
"When you get a group of guys to go away and you do something special together, it makes them closer. It's a really good bonding experience."
Cripps joined the Eagles from St Kilda during the Gillette AFL Trade Period and will start pre-season training with the club's first to third-year players on November 16.
Scott Lycett, Fraser McInnes, Simon Tunbridge, Blayne Wilson and Jeremy McGovern have also headed to Cambodia for the induction camp.
West Coast's fourth to seventh-year players return to training on November 19 with the rest of the squad to resume on November 26.
