The West Coast Eagles today bade farewell to Esperance, its base for a community camp for the last four days, enjoying the attractions of the picturesque town in WA’s deep south.

Some surfed, some took in a cruise around the stunning bays that surround the town, some played golf and others went fishing. It was an ideal climax to an outstanding stint in Esperance and perfect finale before the players move into match mode.

After arriving back in Perth later this afternoon, the squad will begin to jostle for positions in the starting line-up for the round one match against St Kilda.

For those already secure in the team the round of practice matches, starting at Arena Joondalup tomorrow evening with a three-period hit-out, mean little. For those on the periphery of selection these practice games are the first opportunity to cast their names before the selection panel.

Several established stars will be missing from tomorrow’s match, but for a number of the younger players a good showing could earn a place in the opening NAB Cup match against Fremantle on February 26.

Players like Matt Rosa, Mark LeCras, Shannon Hurn, Jaymie Graham and Andrew McDougall will all be looking for early touch while rookies Steven Armstrong, Ben Sharp and Matt Priddis have an eye on elevation to the senior list.

With the late retirement of Phillip Matera and the unfortunate knee injury to full-forward Brad Smith, two positions are open.

Armstrong, who has already played 43 games with Melbourne, has been highly impressive since joining the club, while Priddis and Sharp have been among the eye-catching performers on the track.

After the first intra-club practice match, which will also see about nine WAFL players assist by taking the field, the club will hold a similar hit-out at Subiaco Oval next Friday evening.

The West Coast Eagles encourages all fans to come to either match to get an early glimpse of the team as it prepares for the 2006 season.
