West Coast senior coach Adam Simpson will be looking for club debutant Jamaine Jones to bring an energetic edge to the Eagles’ forward line tomorrow.

Jones, who was added to West Coast’s list as a Supplementary Selection Period rookie in March, won the club’s match committee over with his efforts during the side’s recent scrimmages against Gold Coast and Brisbane.

And now he will play just his eighth AFL game – and first senior fixture since round 20, 2018 – when he lines up against a red hot Port Adelaide outfit at Metricon Stadium.

Simpson said he was excited to see the former Geelong goalsneak don blue and gold for the first time.

“It’s his second opportunity. He’s (come) from Geelong where he played seven ... games. He was a SSP (trial player) and the last pick of the draft for us.

“He’s living with Tim (Kelly) and they’re very good friends. He’s done it the hard way, so hopefully he’ll bring a bit of toughness in the front half. He’s got good speed and he’ll put a bit of pressure on as well.

“We need that energy. From a football (standpoint) without Willie (Rioli) and (Daniel) Venables, we’re still sort of looking for a permanent spot in that forward line.

“He’s got his opportunity. He’s done it the hard way and now the ball is in his court. We are looking forward to him playing.”

While fans will be intrigued to see how Jones performs in his maiden Eagles outing, they will also be eager to celebrate the achievements of premiership duo Jack Darling and Lewis Jetta, who will join the 200 AFL games club tomorrow.

Simpson said it was an exciting occasion for both milestone men.

“’JD’ has got there pretty quick. Him and Gaffy were in the 2010 draft I think and they pretty much went straight into the senior side and haven’t looked back,” Simpson said.

“He’s gone through his ups and downs in his career, but I don’t think he has left the side. He’s now in our leadership group and one of our most consistent players.

“We get a little highlights package every time we have a milestone game and (Jetta’s) way pretty good.

“What I did notice is that in big games and big moments he’s part of the play. In a final a few years ago in the last round (Round 23, 2017) we had to make finals by winning by 20-odd points and he kicked the final (goal) in that one.

“In the 2018 finals series, towards the end of that game (semi-final versus Collingwood he delivered too).

“He’s had some big moments in his career and I’m really proud of the fact he’s got to 200 games.”

Simpson will be hoping that his all of his selected 22 players will bring their A-game tomorrow in what looms as a potentially season-shaping game for West Coast.

The senior coach said the 16th-placed Eagles needed to kick-start their season after dropping games against local sides Gold Coast and Brisbane.

But he acknowledged that task would be easier said than done against Port Adelaide, who sit atop the AFL table with three wins from as many outings.

“I thought we had a crack last week, we just weren’t good enough against a top four side. We couldn’t sustain our effort for long enough.” Simpson said.

“And we were disappointing against Gold Coast, but time will tell what they’re like here at home.

“We’re disappointed and we’ve got higher expectations, but we also know there’s a long game at play and we need to get going pretty quick.

“Port Adelaide are probably the in-form team of the competition and we know what’s in front of us. It’s a massive challenge this weekend.”
