The convenience of training at a quaint little ground in the confines of the Royal Pines Resort was seen as the most appropriate venue for the final hit-out ahead of tomorrow night’s show-down with the Brisbane Lions.
The modified version of the captain’s run was held on the field, about 140 metres long and even closer than that to club’s dining room for the last 12 days.
With players able to train only in their line groups, transporting all of the training equipment as well as the players in three mini vans, departing at staggered intervals, the ground at closest proximity was the preference.
Historically, the captain’s run is held at the match day venue, but that would have meant a return journey of at least two hours for what would have been about an hour on the track.
Last week this session was held at Metricon Stadium, but today it made more sense to stay within the confines of the hub.
After all the ground is in good condition, despite some heavy rain at times in the last week, and it has goal posts at either end.
Fremantle has used it more often than the Eagles since cohabitating in the hub.
The midfielders began the session and when they rotated out, the forwards did their thing ahead of the defensive group’s entry.
The backline contingent involved the two inclusions for this contest – experienced premiership defender Will Schofield and versatile young back Josh Rotham, looking to lock down a place in the line-up.
Schofield was a natural replacement for the suspended four-times all-Australian Jeremy McGovern, while Rotham was promoted to replace rugged back Jackson Nelson.
The players looked sharp and focused and will be determined to give a much better account than they did a week ago against the emerging Suns.
