Adam Simpson expects his troops to up the ante against Brisbane on Saturday night after finding their feet in the club’s Gold Coast hub.
Speaking to the media at the Royal Pines Resort this afternoon, the senior coach sensed his side were eager to atone for their poor round two showing with a better effort against the talented Lions.
Simpson said the team’s settling in period had passed and they were ready to achieve their Queensland mission objective: To win games of footy.
“I’ve seen more footys around the hotel, guys doing ground balls at night and in the wet,” Simpson said.
“I’ve seen more commitment as opposed to trying to settle in. That’s expected. They are professionals and there’s been a bit more routine this week.
“Attitude adjustment is probably the right word. We had a bad performance and we’re looking to bounce back.”
While the media pack homed in on the club’s fumbly hands the humid conditions, Simpson reckoned that wasn’t the sole reason his team’s sloppy performance against the Suns.
After digging into the data the 2018 premiership mentor suggested the local side simply outworked the Eagles around the ground.
He hoped that wouldn’t be the case at The Gabba tomorrow evening.
“I think everyone could have done more (against the Suns) on the weekend, so we’ll find out this week if it is a pattern or an event," Simpson said.
“I think we ran 10km or 12km less than Gold Coast and that’s not normally our MO.
“We’ll find out more about our players (on Saturday). They haven’t let us down too often in the past six or seven years, so we’re going to back them in.”
Simpson and his match committee made two changes leading into the contest, bringing veteran Will Schofield and emerging backman Josh Rotham into the starting side to face the dangerous Lions.
Schofield replaces the suspended Jeremy McGovern, while Rotham takes the place of fellow fledgling Jackson Nelson, who was omitted from the team.
Simpson said he was excited to see the defensive duo make their first senior appearances for the year.
“It’s really tough in this environment if you’re not playing in the seniors,” Simpson offered.
“We’ve got scrimmage games against teams that are up here, but if you’re in your 30s and doing it tough not being in the seniors, that can be difficult. We’ve got a few players in that position, so Schoey is rapt he’s in and hopefully he does a good job.
“(Rotham's) AFL ready. He’s been waiting for an opportunity for a long time. He played a couple of games last year and he played really well last week in the scrimmage, so we’re happy he’s in the side.
“He can play tall and small and he’s probably the quickest player on our list along with (Jack) Petruccelle.
“He’s probably your modern day defender and hopefully he plays a lot of footy for us.”
