Because East Perth, for the second week in succession, had the bye Wellingham and Selwood played reserves for Claremont and Swan Districts respectively. They put on quite a show with Selwood probably best afield after an outstanding effort through the midfield which included a match-winning goal.
Selwood dominated, as one would expect, and had 33 possessions, two marks and five tackles to steer Swans to victory.
Wellingham was only marginally behind Selwood in terms of his output and picked up 28 touches, five marks and two handballs to show that he, too, was ready for consideration to be included in the seniors.
Selwood, a 185-game veteran, has missed the last month with a back injury, but played with freedom an energy and will be pushing his case to play against the Swans.
Wellingham, who has suffered two major ankle injuries after joining the club from Collingwood, has played only three games for West Coast and is keen to build on that in the back end of the year.
While there was only a handful of West Coast players in WAFL action at the weekend, all contributed at a high level.
Key forward Fraser McInnes was lively for Perth, with 15 possessions, seven marks and four handballs in a strong display against Subiaco while Callum Sinclair produced his best effort since returning from a mid-season knee injury.
Sinclair had 18 possessions and five marks, but also had 29 hit outs in a solid effort as a ruckman and key forward.
And Jamie Bennell was a key factor in Swan Districts’ upset win over Claremont. He opposed lively Claremont forward Ian Richardson and kept him under wraps while accumulating 23 touches, five marks and three tackles.
