It had been eight long weeks since the AFL season went into shutdown mode and it was a sight for sore eyes as West Coast's players and coaching staff took to the Mineral Resources Park track on Monday morning.

Greeted by a brisk Perth morning, the Eagles wasted little time getting back into action, albeit training with a twist under current League-wide restrictions.

Groups of no more than eight players and coaches moved through skills work, ensuring no contact, sharing of water bottles or mixing with other groups during these unusual times.

Watched by some excited fans keen to see footy taking a step in the right direction towards a June 11 restart, West Coast's groups were separated largely by their positions - defenders, midfielders and forwards.

Under the eye of coach Adam Simpson, big men Nathan Vardy and Tom Hickey were in an upbeat mood in the first group out on the turf, with lively forward Anthony Treacy and emerging onballer Hamish Brayshaw showing off some sharp skills despite two months away from the club.

Next up was the cream of Simpson's midfield talent, filled with stars including skipper Luke Shuey, Nic Naitanui, Elliot Yeo, gun recruit Tim Kelly and Andrew Gaff.

With a freshly-shorn scalp and beard, star spearhead Josh Kennedy looked fit and ready to fire alongside twin tower Jack Darling, while Liam Ryan beamed and Jarrod Cameron moved smoothly in a positive sign after a pubic bone stress injury kept him out of the round one mix.

The Sherrin zinged around the track as the sun climbed higher on a perfect Autumn day, made even brighter by the prospect of footy returning in little more than three weeks.

"Little bit of first day of school about it (returning to training), but really exciting we're one step closer to getting up to the 'Goldie' (Gold Coast hub) and getting the season started again," Shuey told westcoasteagles.com.au

"We're pretty much (split into groups along position) lines at the moment ... just getting to work with the guys you play around most weeks and getting a bit of chemistry back and I think next week we can start a bit of contact (work).

"Trying to ramp (up our workload) as quick as we can, hoping that most of the guys have done their work which it looks like most of the boys have and we trusted everyone did, so we can get into it pretty quickly."
