Bailey Williams is unashamedly enjoying the perks of living at home with his family in regional Victoria during the AFL shutdown, but the exciting second-year Eagle says he would much rather be back in Western Australia preparing for the restart of season 2020.

Speaking to 6PR’s Sportsday WA program from his family home in Bittern, Williams said he was champing at the bit to resume training alongside his West Coast teammates.

“I’m pretty keen to get back and train with the boys,” Williams said.

"It’s weird times and it’s still sort of day-by-day figuring out what is going on.

“Hopefully it’ll be soon. I’m keen to get back.”

And who could blame him after the progress he made this pre-season?

After spending the whole of 2019 refining his ruck and forward craft in the WAFL, Williams put in the hard yards over the summer months and was rewarded with a Marsh Community Series berth against Essendon at Mineral Resources Park.

The former Dandenong Stingray took his opportunity with both hands, amassing 12 disposals, five hitouts, three marks and a goal to boot in his first outing against AFL opponents.

Many believed Williams was in the box seat to make his senior debut in round one, but an untimely hamstring strain derailed his hopes.

Williams said he was happy with the steady progress he had made since landing at the Eagles via pick No.35 in the 2018 AFL Draft.

“It probably took me a little bit to get used to playing senior footy (in the WAFL),” a candid Williams conceded.

“It was the best level of footy that I have ever played at and I really enjoyed playing and we had a pretty good season at the end of it all.

“I was really rapt to get a gig in the Marsh (Community) Series this year. I was really excited and I thought I went alright. It was good fun.”

For now Williams will have to be content with getting his work done in Bittern.

The 19-year-old said that training alongside some former junior footy pals had been the highlight of his shutdown period so far.

“I’ve been training with a couple mates here and there,” Williams said.

“I’m trying not to train on my own too much. I usually find someone to kick with.

“I’m really loving training. It’s one of the only things that really gets me out of the house, so it’s good.”
