THE AFL has asked the 18 clubs if they want to trade future draft selections in this year's NAB AFL Exchange Period.
The clubs have until July 15 to respond to the AFL's "discussion paper".
As part of the ongoing debate over father-son and academy selections, the league has formed a player movement advisory group, which consists of staff from the AFL and club football departments.
The group is considering the idea of club's being able to go into 'draft debt' by nominating for father-son and academy selections.
A number of clubs have argued that teams with potential father-son or academy players will be advantaged if they trade the use of future selections and go into debt.
But the player movement advisory group has been considering the introduction of trading future picks for a while, with the belief it could assist competitive balance by increasing clubs' flexibility in making list decisions.
The AFL announced a new father-son and northern academy bidding system in May this year, where each draft selection is allocated a points value on a sliding scale.
