There are football fans, and there are football fanatics. Then, there’s Shayne Hendriksen. Shayne lives for football, and as our round four Member of the Round, we were lucky to learn just how much a part of his life the West Coast Eagles are.
“I wish the game could be played all year round”, Shayne said.
“My life slows down and I’m lost when it’s not on.”
A seated member at Domain Stadium since 2004, Shayne gets his love of the game from his Dad, who used to sit on the couch with Shayne each week, watching ‘The Winners’. From there, Shayne played junior footy in Pingelly and continued to help out at the club any way he could once his playing days were done.
It’s this passion which has now transferred across to the West Coast Eagles, and there isn’t a single part of the game that Shayne doesn’t cherish.
“I love everything about the game, from being at the ground, to having that conversation with your mate at work about their team losing and your team winning, watching all the superstars playing week in week out, seeing the little fans dressing up in their team colours to the little old lady arriving at the game.”
When you ask Shayne about his favourite memory as an Eagles fan, a grand day in the club’s history immediately springs to mind.
“(It has to be) the 2006 Grand Final,” Shayne said.
“I travelled by bus in 2005 to watch them lose a close one, and then got the opportunity in 2006 to go across again by bus to watch them win a very close one.”
