There’s nothing bigger on the WA football calendar than the first Carlton Draught Derby of the season, and for Jayne Wager, there was no better way to spend the day than as our Member of the Round for round three.
For the best part of thirty years, Jayne and her beloved Nan, Betty, were diehard Eagles fans who chatted for hours each week about their football team. It didn’t matter whether the Eagles won, lost or drew the match, Jayne and Betty would speak after every match, perfecting the ritual of coaching from their couches, whether the seasons were ultimately triumphant or disappointing.
Jayne was shattered when, in mid-2014, Betty passed away, and it took over twelve months for Jayne to be able to return to West Coast Eagles matches with the passion that she and her Nan had each and every week.
As our Member of the Round in round three, Jayne had a blast on the day (all made even better by the final result).
“I felt very honoured to be member of the round (against Fremantle). It was great to spend some time on the ground and speak with Karl Langdon.
“It was fantastic to be able to watch the boys train, and cheer them as they ran up onto the ground from the race,” Jayne said.
As an In The Wings member, Jayne gets to Eagles matches when she can, but never fails to tune in to our matches, and still watches the team with the passion that was given to her by her Nan.
“She’s looking over me,” Jayne said.
