More than 400 Captain’s Club members enjoyed compelling discussions and a sumptuous meal ahead of West Coast’s Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round clash against the Gold Coast Suns at Domain Stadium last Sunday.
The ever dynamic Karl Langdon and MC extraordinaire Robert ‘Tiny’ Holly backed up their hosting duties from Friday evening’s Eagles in the Community Gala Auction and kick-started the afternoon’s festivities with a quick game of heads or tails to determine which member would win a $50 team store voucher.
After the coin competition was run and the voucher won, Langdon introduced West Coast Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett, who discussed with members his vision for the future of the club, the progress of the Eagles’ budding Lathlain facilities and up-to-date details about the Perth Stadium.
Members enjoyed an indigenous-inspired main of lamb rump with a wattle seed, macadamia crust and munthari berry jus before the luncheon’s second special guest, Collingwood great Tony Shaw, was welcomed to the stage.
The former Magpies player and coach shared several stories about football of years gone by in addition to his views on the West Coast Eagles’ inception into the AFL 30 years ago and his first game against the blue and gold warriors from the west.
Shaw also touched on changes in the game, including the difference between post-game celebrations now and then, as well as offering his thoughts on the ‘red-card’ debate of recent weeks.
The luncheon drew to a close with a raffle in which the winner took home a 2016 West Coast Eagles signed Sherrin.
The raffles’ second and third prize winners collected a hat signed by Eagles skipper Shannon Hurn and senior coach Adam Simpson and a 2016 team-signed flag respectively.
Thank you to all of our members for attending the second Captain’s Club luncheon of the year.
The third and final luncheon will be held before our Round 18 match against Melbourne on Saturday, July 23.
